Details

Add authentic post-war British freight operations to your N gauge layout with the Graham Farish BR 12T Ventilated Van (Plywood Sides) in BR Bauxite Early Livery (373-751D), a finely detailed model representing one of the most common standard freight wagons introduced by British Railways after nationalisation. Finished in classic BR bauxite with early crest markings, this model perfectly captures the appearance of everyday goods traffic during the steam-era railway period.

Built as part of British Railways’ drive to standardise freight rolling stock from the late 1940s onwards, the 12-ton ventilated van was designed to transport general merchandise requiring protection from the weather while still allowing airflow through ventilated ends. Featuring plywood-sided construction mounted on a steel chassis, these wagons became a familiar sight in goods yards and mixed freight trains across the UK rail network.

The Graham Farish model faithfully reproduces the prototype with precision-moulded plywood sides, corrugated ventilated ends, detailed door hinges and locking gear, plus finely rendered underframe components. Designed for N gauge layouts, the wagon also features metal wheelsets, NEM coupling pockets and realistic early BR livery application for excellent authenticity and reliable running performance.

Historical Background

Following the creation of British Railways in 1948, a major programme began to replace ageing pre-nationalisation wagons with standardised freight designs. Among the most important was the 12-ton ventilated van, built in large numbers for transporting general merchandise and perishable goods requiring airflow during transit. Constructed using a steel chassis with plywood body panelling and ventilated ends, these vans combined durability with practicality and quickly became one of the most recognisable freight vehicles of the steam era. Finished in BR bauxite with early crest markings, they operated widely across Britain throughout the 1950s and remained in service for many years afterwards.
