Details
Add authentic post-war British freight operations to your N gauge layout with the Graham Farish BR 12T Ventilated Van (Plywood Sides) in BR Bauxite Late Livery (373-752A), a finely detailed model representing one of the most recognisable standard freight wagons introduced by British Railways after nationalisation. Finished in classic BR bauxite with late crest markings, this wagon perfectly captures the appearance of everyday goods traffic during the later steam-era and early diesel transition period.
Built as part of British Railways’ programme to standardise freight rolling stock from the late 1940s onwards, the 12-ton ventilated van was designed for transporting general merchandise and perishable goods requiring airflow while remaining protected from the weather. Featuring plywood-sided body construction with ventilated ends, these wagons became a familiar sight in freight yards, mixed goods trains and branch line services across Britain.
The Graham Farish model faithfully reproduces the prototype in N gauge with finely moulded plywood sides, detailed door locking gear, corrugated ventilated ends and realistic underframe detailing. Finished in BR bauxite with late crest insignia, it is ideal for British Railways Era 5 layouts and authentic steam-to-diesel transition freight formations.
Historical Background
Following the formation of British Railways in 1948, a major effort was made to replace ageing pre-nationalisation freight stock with standardised wagon designs. Among the most successful was the 12-ton ventilated van, which was built in large numbers for transporting general merchandise and goods requiring airflow during transit. Constructed with steel underframes and plywood-sided bodies, these vans combined durability, practicality and ease of maintenance. By the late 1950s many examples carried the updated BR late crest livery, becoming a common feature of freight operations throughout the UK during the transition from steam to diesel traction. Their widespread use and long service life make them an essential part of British railway freight history and a popular choice among N gauge railway modellers and collectors.
