The HTA bogie hopper wagon was introduced for English, Welsh & Scottish Railway (EWS) to transport coal efficiently between ports, collieries and power stations. Built between 2001 and 2004 in large numbers, the wagons featured a robust steel hopper body mounted on heavy-duty bogies, allowing high-capacity operation in long block trains typically hauled by Class 66 locomotives. As coal traffic declined in the UK following the reduction of coal-fired power generation, many HTA wagons were later rebuilt into HRA aggregate hoppers for stone traffic, extending their operational lifespan.
