Details
Bring authentic modern freight operations to your N gauge railway with the Graham Farish HTA Bogie Hopper Wagon (Ex-EWS) in DB Schenker livery – Weathered (373-851), a highly detailed model representing one of the most recognisable heavy-haul wagons used on the contemporary UK rail network. Finished in realistic weathered DB Schenker branding, this wagon captures the hard-working appearance of coal and bulk freight traffic during the post-privatisation era.
Originally introduced for English, Welsh & Scottish Railway (EWS) in the early 2000s, the HTA bogie hopper wagon was designed for high-capacity coal transportation between collieries, ports and power stations. Following the rebranding of EWS into DB Schenker Rail UK in 2007, many wagons were repainted into DB Schenker livery while continuing to operate in heavy-haul block trains across Britain. Their rugged steel hopper bodies and bogie design made them ideal for demanding freight duties, typically hauled by Class 66 locomotives.
The Graham Farish model faithfully reproduces the HTA wagon in N gauge, featuring finely moulded hopper bodywork, realistic weathering effects, detailed bogies and accurate underframe components. The weathered finish adds extra realism, reflecting the heavy industrial conditions these wagons operated under in everyday service.
Historical Background
The HTA bogie hopper wagon was introduced from 2001 onwards for EWS as part of a major fleet modernisation programme aimed at improving the efficiency of bulk coal transportation across the UK rail network. Built in large numbers, these wagons featured high-capacity steel hopper bodies mounted on bogies, enabling them to operate in long, heavy freight trains serving power stations and industrial sites. In 2007, EWS was rebranded as DB Schenker Rail UK following acquisition by Deutsche Bahn, and many HTA wagons received updated DB Schenker branding while continuing in frontline service. Although coal traffic later declined in Britain, the HTA fleet became a defining feature of modern rail freight and remains highly popular among railway modellers recreating realistic contemporary freight operations.
