The British Railways Mk1 coach was BR’s first standardised main line carriage design and quickly became one of the most successful vehicles in British railway history. Built from 1951 through to the early 1960s, the Mk1 replaced the diverse coaching stock inherited from the former “Big Four” companies – LMS, LNER, GWR and SR – combining their best features into a stronger, safer, all-steel bodied design. Its durability and versatility ensured the Mk1 became a mainstay of BR passenger operations for decades.

Among the more specialised variants were the Travelling Post Office (TPO) vehicles, including the POS (Post Office Sorting) coach, where mail was sorted while the train was in motion. Introduced in the 1960s and operating through the BR era and into Privatisation under EWS until 2004, POS vehicles were an essential part of TPO formations.
