Details

The British Railways Mk1 was the first standardised main line coaching stock introduced by British Railways, and it quickly became one of the most successful carriage designs ever built in Britain. Constructed from 1951 to the early 1960s, the Mk1 replaced a wide variety of older vehicles inherited from the pre-nationalisation companies, combining the best features of earlier designs into a strong, all-steel body that improved both safety and durability.

Within the Mk1 family, Travelling Post Office (TPO) vehicles were among the most specialised. POS (Post Office Sorting) coaches allowed mail to be sorted while the train was in motion, working alongside POT vans which carried bagged mail. These vehicles remained in regular service from the 1960s through to 2004, operating in later years for English, Welsh & Scottish Railway.

This Graham Farish N gauge Mk1 POS coach faithfully reproduces the distinctive profile of the prototype, with finely moulded bodysides, roof ventilators, and flush-glazed windows.
