Details

The British Railways Mk1 was the first standardised main line coaching stock introduced by British Railways, and it quickly became one of the most successful carriage designs ever built in Britain. Constructed between 1951 and the early 1960s, Mk1 coaches were designed to replace the wide variety of vehicles inherited from the former LMS, LNER, GWR and SR. By combining proven design features with a robust all-steel body, the Mk1 offered improved strength, safety and durability, ensuring a long service life across many types of passenger and specialist trains.

Among the more specialised variants were the Travelling Post Office (TPO) vehicles. POS (Post Office Sorting) coaches allowed mail to be sorted while the train was in motion, working alongside POT vans used to store bagged mail. Introduced in the 1960s, these vehicles remained a key part of TPO formations through the BR era and into privatisation, later operating for English, Welsh & Scottish Railway until the end of TPO services in 2004.

This Graham Farish N gauge Mk1 POS coach faithfully reproduces the distinctive profile of the prototype. Finely moulded bodysides, roof ventilators, flush-glazed windows and separately fitted metal handrails deliver excellent realism. Detailed gangways, footboards, and a fully equipped underframe featuring truss rods, battery boxes and brake equipment enhance the appearance, while metal wheelsets and NEM close-coupling mechanisms provide smooth, reliable running. Authentic liveries and crisp printing complete a highly realistic addition to any BR-era mail train formation.
