Britain’s railways were developed primarily to move freight and, by the early twentieth century, hundreds of independent companies operated their own wagons to transport goods across the UK rail network. Fleet sizes varied widely, from small businesses owning a single wagon to large industrial enterprises with fleets numbering in the hundreds. The vast majority of privately owned wagons were wooden-bodied open wagons, with coal by far the most common load. Depending on the nature of the owner’s business, these wagons also carried commodities such as coke, minerals and aggregates, making private owner wagons a defining feature of pre-Grouping British freight operations.
