Details
Add authentic early containerised freight traffic to your N gauge railway with the Graham Farish Conflat Wagon in BR Bauxite (Early) with Two AF Containers ‘Birds Eye’ (377-341C), a finely detailed model representing one of the most innovative freight developments of the British Railways era. Finished in BR bauxite with two distinctive white AF insulated containers carrying the famous Birds Eye branding, this set perfectly captures the transition towards modern intermodal freight transport in post-war Britain.
Originally developed from pre-nationalisation container wagon designs, the Conflat wagon was built to carry removable containers that allowed goods to be transferred efficiently between rail and road transport. AF-type insulated containers were specifically designed for temperature-sensitive traffic such as frozen and perishable food products. The inclusion of the iconic Birds Eye branding reflects the growing importance of frozen food distribution across Britain during the 1950s and 1960s, when rail freight played a major role in national food logistics.
The Graham Farish model faithfully recreates both the Conflat wagon and twin AF containers in N gauge, featuring finely detailed bodywork, realistic planked decking, accurate chassis detailing and separately moulded containers with authentic door and frame detailing. The distinctive Birds Eye graphics add extra period realism, making this wagon ideal for steam-era and early diesel freight formations.
Historical Background
Containerised rail freight in Britain began long before modern intermodal trains, with railway companies developing dedicated container wagons to improve freight handling efficiency. The Conflat wagon became one of the most important of these designs, allowing removable containers to be transported by rail and transferred directly to road vehicles. Following nationalisation in 1948, British Railways continued to expand container traffic, including insulated AF containers used for frozen and perishable goods. Birds Eye, one of Britain’s best-known frozen food brands, relied heavily on efficient refrigerated and insulated transport networks to distribute products nationwide. Wagons such as this became a familiar sight across the British Railways network during the post-war era, representing an important step in the evolution of modern freight logistics and container transport.
