Details

The IIA hopper wagons were a later development of the British Merry-go-round (MGR) coal wagon concept, introduced during the late 1980s and early 1990s to replace life-expired earlier MGR types. Designed for continuous loading and unloading while in motion, they were built for high-capacity block coal trains supplying power stations. The IIA wagons featured improved suspension, air braking and a stronger bodyshell, allowing operation at higher speeds and with increased reliability. Coded IIA under TOPS, they became a familiar sight in Railfreight and later sectorisation and privatisation-era liveries, representing the final generation of traditional British coal hoppers.
