Details

The HYA hopper wagons were a development of the British Merry-go-round (MGR) coal wagon fleet, introduced during the 1970s to carry coal in block trains between collieries and power stations. Coded HYA under TOPS, they were based on the standard 32-ton MGR design but fitted with lightweight canopies, reducing coal dust loss during transit and improving route cleanliness. Like other MGR wagons, HYAs were designed for continuous loading and discharge while moving, allowing rapid turnaround at both ends of the journey. They became a familiar sight on heavy coal flows across the British Rail network.
