Details

Add authentic British Railways freight traffic to your N gauge layout with the Graham Farish BR 12T Vent Van with Plywood Doors in BR Bauxite (Late) ‘BOCM Animal Feeds’ livery (377-628C), a finely detailed model representing one of the most common covered freight wagons used across Britain during the steam and early diesel eras. Finished in classic BR bauxite with distinctive BOCM Animal Feeds branding, this wagon perfectly captures the appearance of branded merchandise traffic operating throughout the 1950s and 1960s.

Built as part of British Railways’ post-nationalisation standard wagon programme, the 12-ton ventilated van was designed to transport goods requiring protection from the weather while allowing airflow through roof and end ventilators. The plywood-door variant featured reinforced construction combined with practical loading access, making these wagons highly versatile for general merchandise and agricultural traffic. Wagons carrying branded liveries such as BOCM Animal Feeds added extra colour and realism to freight operations across the UK rail network.

The Graham Farish model faithfully recreates the prototype in N gauge, featuring finely moulded plywood doors, detailed body framing, realistic ventilated ends and accurately rendered underframe detail. Crisp BOCM Animal Feeds graphics and authentic BR late crest markings make this wagon ideal for steam-era and transition-era freight formations. Inspired by Bachmann’s highly detailed ventilated van tooling, the model also benefits from NEM coupling pockets and metal wheelsets for smooth and reliable running performance.

Historical Background

Following the formation of British Railways in 1948, a major programme was launched to replace ageing pre-nationalisation freight wagons with standardised designs. Among the most numerous was the 12-ton ventilated van, built for carrying general merchandise and agricultural products requiring airflow during transit. Featuring ventilated ends and robust plywood or planked body construction, these wagons became a familiar sight across Britain in mixed goods trains and industrial freight traffic. Some wagons carried commercial branding for companies whose products were commonly transported by rail, including BOCM (British Oil and Cake Mills), one of Britain’s leading animal feed manufacturers. Branded wagons such as these reflected the close relationship between British industry and the railway freight network during the mid-20th century.
