Historical Background
The Junkers Ju 52, affectionately known as “Tante Ju” (Auntie Ju), is one of the most iconic transport aircraft of the 20th century. The specific aircraft represented here, D-AQUI, first entered service on 6 April 1936 with Deutsche Luft Hansa, operating passenger routes across Europe during the golden age of propeller-driven air travel.
Following World War II, this resilient aircraft continued its career in Norway through the mid-1950s, before being sold to Ecuador, where it transported both passengers and cargo until being withdrawn from service in 1962 in Quito.
Years later, the aircraft was rediscovered by American aviation enthusiasts, restored, and displayed at airshows under the nickname “Iron Annie.” In 1984, Lufthansa reacquired the aircraft and undertook a full restoration to celebrate its aviation heritage.
For decades, D-AQUI became a flying ambassador of classic aviation, offering sightseeing flights and appearing at events across Germany until 2018, delighting thousands of spectators and passengers.
Today, this historic aircraft remains a symbol of Lufthansa’s legacy and is set to feature prominently in the airline group’s visitor centre from 2026, marking the centenary of the original Lufthansa airline.
