Historical Background

The Mercedes-Benz GLA is a compact luxury crossover SUV that marked Mercedes-Benz’s entry into the premium small SUV segment. First introduced in 2013 and based on the Mercedes-Benz A-Class (W176) platform, the GLA was designed to combine hatchback-like driving dynamics with raised ride height, SUV styling and everyday practicality. It quickly became one of the brand’s most popular compact models, appealing to urban drivers seeking premium design and versatility.

The first-generation Mercedes-Benz GLA (X156) featured a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines, front-wheel drive or 4MATIC all-wheel drive, and a premium interior consistent with Mercedes-Benz standards. Its coupe-inspired exterior styling, compact dimensions and refined road manners made it particularly popular in European markets. A facelift in 2017 brought updated styling, improved infotainment systems and enhanced driver assistance technology, further strengthening its position in the competitive compact SUV market.

In 2020, Mercedes-Benz introduced the second-generation GLA (H247), built on the MFA2 platform shared with the latest A-Class.
