Model Details

The Herpa Ford Granada “Fire Brigade” (item 099004) is a finely detailed miniature representing a classic European fire service command vehicle from the late 20th century. Finished in traditional red-and-white Feuerwehr livery, this model depicts the Ford Granada in its role as a fire department command or incident support car, reflecting an earlier era of German and European emergency fleet design.

Produced as part of the Herpa Basic range, this release captures the transition period in emergency services when standard passenger cars were still widely adapted for operational command duties before the widespread adoption of dedicated emergency SUVs and purpose-built command vehicles.

Historical Background

The Ford Granada was introduced in the early 1970s as Ford Europe’s executive-class vehicle, produced in Germany and the United Kingdom. Known for its comfort, reliability, and strong road performance for its time, it quickly became a popular platform for government fleets, police forces, and fire services across Europe.

During the 1970s and 1980s, many fire brigades in Germany and neighbouring countries used vehicles like the Ford Granada as Einsatzleitwagen (command vehicles). These were typically standard production sedans or estates fitted with radios, emergency lighting, and basic operational equipment. At the time, fire services did not yet rely on specialised SUVs or purpose-built command vans, so adapted passenger cars played a central role in coordinating incidents from the scene.

As emergency response systems modernised in the 1990s and beyond, these sedan-based command vehicles were gradually replaced by more spacious vans and SUVs offering improved communication systems and on-site working environments. The Ford Granada therefore represents an important historical phase in fire service evolution—bridging the gap between traditional patrol cars and modern mobile command units.
