Historical Background

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is widely regarded as the flagship of luxury saloons and has long represented the pinnacle of automotive engineering, comfort and innovation. Although the “S-Class” name was officially introduced in 1972, Mercedes-Benz’s large luxury saloon lineage dates back much further, with predecessors such as the legendary “Ponton” and “Fintail” models. The S-Class designation was first applied to the W116 generation, establishing a new benchmark for executive luxury vehicles.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class W116 (1972–1980) was the first model to officially carry the S-Class name, introducing advanced safety features and refined comfort that set new industry standards. This was followed by the W126 (1979–1991), one of the most successful S-Class generations, renowned for its aerodynamic design, build quality and long-distance refinement. The W126 became a symbol of prestige across the world and is still highly respected among classic Mercedes enthusiasts.

Subsequent generations continued to push technological boundaries. The W140 (1991–1998) introduced increased size, improved refinement and cutting-edge features for its time, while the W220 (1998–2005) shifted towards lighter construction and modern electronics. The W221 (2005–2013) and W222 (2013–2020) further advanced luxury, safety systems and digital technology, cementing the S-Class as a leader in automotive innovation. The current W223 generation, launched in 2020, continues this tradition with state-of-the-art infotainment, driver assistance systems and exceptional interior craftsmanship.
