Historical Background

The Ford Capri is one of the most iconic European sports coupés ever produced, often described as “the car you always promised yourself.” Introduced in 1969 and produced until 1986, the Ford Capri was developed by Ford of Europe to bring affordable sporting style and performance to a wide audience, in much the same way the Ford Mustang had done in the United States. Designed primarily in the UK and Germany, the Capri combined sleek coupé styling with everyday practicality and a wide range of engine options.

The first-generation Ford Capri Mk1 launched in 1969 and quickly became a sales success thanks to its long bonnet, rear-wheel-drive layout and extensive model range, from economical four-cylinder engines to powerful V6 variants such as the 3.0-litre Essex-powered models. In 1974, the Capri Mk2 introduced a more practical hatchback rear design while retaining its sporty character and broad appeal. This was followed in 1978 by the Capri Mk3, which refined the styling with quad headlights, a lower stance and improved aerodynamics, helping to modernise the model while maintaining its core identity.

Throughout its production life, the Ford Capri was widely used in motorsport, particularly in touring car racing, further enhancing its sporting reputation. Special editions and performance models, including the Capri 2.8 Injection, became highly desirable among enthusiasts, offering strong performance and distinctive styling.
