The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the flagship luxury saloon range of Mercedes-Benz and is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential car lines in automotive history. While the “S-Class” name was formally introduced in 1972, it represents a lineage of large Mercedes saloons dating back to earlier models such as the “Ponton” and “Fintail” series, which established the brand’s reputation for engineering excellence, comfort and safety.

The first official Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the W116, was introduced in 1972 and set new global standards for luxury and automotive safety. It introduced advanced features for its time and established the S-Class as the benchmark for executive saloons. This was followed by the highly successful W126 (1979–1991), which became one of the most iconic Mercedes-Benz models ever produced, praised for its aerodynamic design, durability and long-distance comfort.

The W140 generation (1991–1998) further elevated the S-Class with increased size, improved refinement and advanced technology, becoming a symbol of engineering ambition in the early 1990s. The W220 (1998–2005) introduced a lighter design and more modern electronics, followed by the W221 (2005–2013), which refined luxury, comfort systems and driving dynamics. The W222 (2013–2020) continued this evolution with cutting-edge driver assistance systems, advanced infotainment and exceptional interior craftsmanship. The current W223 generation, launched in 2020, represents the latest stage in the S-Class legacy, featuring electrified powertrains, high-definition digital systems and state-of-the-art safety technology.
