Historical Background
The Lockheed L-1649 Starliner was the final and most advanced development of the Lockheed Constellation family, introduced in the late 1950s as a long-range intercontinental airliner. The Trans World Airlines operated the type under the “Jetstream” name, using it on transatlantic routes such as New York to London and Frankfurt during the early years of long-haul international passenger aviation.
Despite its exceptional range and performance for a piston-powered aircraft, the Starliner’s service life was short due to the rapid introduction of jet airliners such as the Boeing 707. By the late 1950s and 1960s, the type was gradually retired as airlines transitioned to faster and more efficient jet aircraft, marking the end of the great piston airliner era.
