The Antonov AN-72, known by its NATO code name “Coaler,” was developed in the late 1970s to replace the widely used AN-26 turboprop transport aircraft. Its distinctive engine placement—mounted forward of and above the wing—contributes to its unique profile and aerodynamic performance. Utilising the Coanda Effect, named after Romanian aerodynamics pioneer Henri Coanda, the engine exhaust is directed over the curved wing surface, enhancing lift and allowing for shorter takeoff and landing distances. This innovative design makes the AN-72 ideal for operations from short and unprepared runways. The National Guard of Ukraine operates two AN-72 aircraft alongside a fleet of AN-26 transports. These aircraft play a vital role in supporting a wide range of missions, including border protection, peacekeeping under UN mandates, counter-terrorism operations, and safeguarding critical national infrastructure such as energy facilities.
