Description
Ilyushin IL-18 Aero Caribbean CU-T1532 (1:200)
This Herpa 573719 Il-18 model is a precision 1:200 scale die-cast replica, representing aircraft CU-T1532 in the distinctive Aero Caribbean white, yellow, and blue livery.
The model accurately depicts the Ilyushin Il-18 four-engine turboprop airliner, featuring its straight wing configuration, T-tail design, and rear-mounted tailplane typical of Soviet-era long-range turboprops. The livery reflects its Cuban regional and charter service role, operated under Aero Caribbean, a Cubana subsidiary.
Aircraft CU-T1532 has a particularly complex operational history. Originally built in 1968 for East Germany’s Interflug, it later passed through multiple operators including Berline (Germany), Air Zory (Bulgaria), before being transferred to Cuba in 1995. It remained in service there into the early 2000s before being withdrawn after an engine fire incident in 2004.
With a wingspan of 187 mm, this model has strong presence in 1:200 collections while maintaining accurate proportions and detailed surface printing.
Unlike modern airliners, this release captures the practical, long-service life of Cold War-era transport aircraft, making it a strong historical addition to any 1:200 collection.

Historical Background
The Ilyushin Il-18 was one of the most successful Soviet turboprop airliners, introduced in the late 1950s and widely exported throughout Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. It became known for its durability, long range for a turboprop, and ability to operate in challenging conditions.
In 1982, Cuba established Aero Caribbean as a subsidiary of Cubana de Aviación to operate domestic and regional charter services across the Caribbean, including destinations such as the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, and Central America.
The Il-18 fleet formed the backbone of its early operations, enabling reliable regional connectivity in a politically and economically constrained aviation environment. Over time, these aircraft were gradually replaced by more modern turboprops such as the ATR 42 and ATR 72.
Aircraft CU-T1532 is notable for its unusually international service life, having operated across East Germany, Germany, Bulgaria, and finally Cuba before its retirement. Its long career reflects both the robustness of the Il-18 design and the complex aircraft redistribution networks of the post-Cold War aviation world.
