Historical Background

The Airbus A321neo marks a major shift in fleet strategy for KLM as the airline modernises its European and medium-haul operations. The first A321neo entered service in September 2024, beginning a gradual replacement of older Boeing 737 aircraft across KLM and its subsidiaries.

KLM has ordered up to 60 aircraft from the A320neo family, which will be shared with Transavia and Transavia France, creating a more efficient and standardised narrowbody fleet.

The aircraft are configured in a single-class layout with 227 seats, optimised for high-density European routes. Early destinations included major cities such as Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, Prague, Rome, Stockholm, and Vienna, highlighting the aircraft’s role in KLM’s core short- and medium-haul network.

A unique feature of the fleet is its butterfly naming concept, chosen through an internal employee vote. Aircraft like PH-AXE carry names inspired by butterfly species, symbolising transformation and renewal as KLM enters a new phase of operational efficiency.
