Historical Background

During the 1950s and 1960s, De Havilland Canada became a global leader in STOL aircraft, producing rugged designs capable of reaching isolated locations with minimal infrastructure.

As commercial aviation expanded, there was growing demand for an aircraft capable of operating short regional routes from small airports and very short runways, reducing congestion at major hubs. This led to the development of the DHC-7 “Dash 7”, first unveiled in 1975 and designed to carry around 50 passengers.

The Dash 7’s defining capability was its ability to operate from runways under 700 metres, including unprepared airstrips in remote, mountainous, tropical, and Arctic regions where jet aircraft could not operate.

Only 113 aircraft were produced, and today just a small number remain in active service. Air Tindi, founded in 1988 in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, is one of the last operators, using the type to connect remote communities across northern Canada.
