Tupolev TU-144S Design Bureau CCCP-77144 (1:200)

Historical Background

The Tupolev Tu-144S, registration CCCP-77144, was one of the most significant examples of the Soviet Union’s ambitious supersonic passenger aircraft programme developed by the Tupolev Design Bureau during the Cold War era. Known in the West as the “Concordski” due to its resemblance to the Anglo-French Concorde, the Tu-144 was the world’s first supersonic transport aircraft to achieve flight, marking a major milestone in aviation history.

The Tu-144S variant represented an improved production version designed for limited passenger service with Aeroflot, the Soviet state airline. It featured a delta-wing configuration, retractable forward canards for improved low-speed control, and four turbojet engines mounted beneath the wings. Capable of cruising at speeds exceeding Mach 2, the aircraft was designed to significantly reduce long-distance travel times across the vast Soviet Union.

Aircraft CCCP-77144 was part of the early operational fleet and served in both testing and limited commercial evaluation roles. Although the Tu-144 entered scheduled passenger service in 1977 on the Moscow–Alma-Ata route, its operational career was extremely short due to high fuel consumption, technical complexity, and concerns over reliability and safety. The programme was ultimately withdrawn from passenger service, although development continued briefly in specialised research and test roles.

Despite its limited commercial success, the Tu-144 remains a landmark achievement in aerospace engineering. It demonstrated the Soviet Union’s ability to develop cutting-edge supersonic transport technology and played an important role in high-speed aerodynamics research, much of which influenced later aerospace developments.

Today, CCCP-77144 is remembered as part of this pioneering fleet and is preserved in aviation history as a symbol of Cold War technological competition and innovation in supersonic flight.
