Historical Background
The Ilyushin Il-62 was the first long-range four-engine jet airliner developed in the Soviet Union, marking a major milestone in Soviet civil aviation.
Introduced in the 1960s, the aircraft enabled nonstop intercontinental flights from Moscow to destinations across Africa, Asia, and even North America, a major advancement over earlier turboprop aircraft like the Tupolev Tu-114.
From the 1960s through the 1990s, the Il-62 became the primary long-haul aircraft of Aeroflot, with the airline operating the majority of the 295 aircraft built.
The improved Il-62M variant, introduced in the 1970s, featured upgraded engines and performance, extending the aircraft’s operational life. Remarkably, the type remained in Aeroflot service for over 40 years, with the final aircraft only being retired in 2005, demonstrating its durability and reliability.
Beyond Aeroflot, the Il-62 was also widely used by other Eastern Bloc airlines, making it one of the most internationally recognised Soviet airliners of the Cold War era.
