Historical Background

The Airbus BelugaXL is a highly specialised cargo aircraft developed by Airbus to transport large aircraft components between its European production facilities. Based on the Airbus A330-200 platform, it features an enlarged fuselage, distinctive “beluga” whale inspired shape and a massive upper cargo bay designed specifically to carry oversized sections such as wings and fuselage components for Airbus aircraft assembly. Entering service in the late 2010s, the BelugaXL provides increased capacity over its predecessor, the BelugaST, and is a key asset in Airbus’ industrial logistics network.
