Historical Background

The Airbus A220 is a next-generation narrow-body airliner originally developed by Bombardier as the CSeries before Airbus took over the programme. Entering service in 2016, it is known for exceptional fuel efficiency, advanced aerodynamics, and a quiet, comfortable cabin, making it ideal for short to medium-haul operations.

QantasLink introduced the Airbus A220 into its fleet in 2024 as part of a major domestic fleet renewal programme across Australia. The aircraft is gradually replacing older regional jets and Boeing 717s, providing improved range, reduced fuel consumption, and enhanced passenger comfort on domestic and regional routes.

The “Flying Art Series” livery on VH-X4A is part of a collaboration between Qantas and Indigenous Australian artists through Balarinji, featuring artwork by Maringka Baker. The design tells the Dreaming story of two sisters travelling across Australia, symbolising connection, journey, and return to Country. This makes the aircraft not only a modern aviation asset but also a culturally significant flying artwork.
