Historical Background

The ATR 72-200 is a twin-engine turboprop regional airliner developed jointly by Aérospatiale of France and Aeritalia of Italy, introduced in the late 1980s to provide efficient short-haul passenger transport. Designed for regional and feeder routes, it features a high-wing configuration, excellent short takeoff and landing performance and low operating costs compared to jet aircraft of similar capacity. The ATR 72-200 typically seats around 66 to 74 passengers and became widely used by regional carriers across Europe and other global markets.

LOT Polish Airlines operated the ATR 72 family as part of its regional network, using the type to connect smaller cities and domestic destinations within Poland as well as nearby European routes. The aircraft SP-LFA represents part of LOT’s early turboprop operations during the transition period when the airline expanded and modernised its short-haul fleet following the political and economic changes in Eastern Europe. The ATR 72 played an important role in strengthening regional connectivity and supporting feeder traffic into LOT’s long-haul services from its Warsaw hub.
