Historical Background

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is part of Boeing’s advanced long-haul family, designed to improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions and enhance passenger comfort through lightweight composite construction, modern aerodynamics and efficient twin-engine performance. Since entering service in the 2010s, the 787-9 has become a flagship aircraft for long-haul international routes worldwide.

Qantas’ “Flying Art Series” is a long-running initiative that showcases Indigenous Australian artwork on selected aircraft, developed in collaboration with First Nations artists and design studio Balarinji. The “Yam Dreaming” livery is based on Emily Kame Kngwarreye’s 1991 painting of the same name, which represents the yam plant, a vital food source and cultural symbol in her homeland of Utopia in the Northern Territory. The aircraft VH-ZND carries this artwork across its fuselage in flowing red and white tones, blending contemporary aviation design with traditional storytelling. The aircraft is also named after the artist herself, further honouring her contribution to Australian art and culture.
