Details

The Vossloh DE 18 is a contemporary diesel-electric locomotive built by Vossloh Rolling Stock in Kiel, Germany, with production starting in 2010 and continuing into the 2020s, making it one of the most capable modern diesel types in Europe for shunting and freight duties.

Designed with a Bo'Bo' wheel arrangement, the DE 18 combines strong tractive effort with a top speed of 120 km/h and an 1,800 kW intermediate-speed diesel engine from MTU’s 12V4000 series. Its versatile diesel-electric transmission makes it suitable for heavy-duty shunting, industrial and port operations, as well as mainline freight and regional transport, making it a flexible modern workhorse for operators across Europe.

The locomotive’s mid-cab design provides excellent visibility for shunting and yard operations, and up to 90 % common components with the related diesel-hydraulic G 18 help with maintenance and reliability. DE 18s can be fitted with optional features such as remote control operation, eco-drive fuel saving systems, and low-emission engines that meet modern Stage V emissions standards.

Since introduction, DE 18 locomotives have been ordered by a range of freight and industrial operators, including BASF, Max Bögl, and leasing companies working with national networks. A growing number are now certified for cross-border service in countries including Sweden, Norway, Italy, Belgium and France, reflecting its increasing role in European freight and shunting operations.
