Details

This model represents one of Henry Ivatt’s enduring ‘J13’ Class locomotives, originally built by Sharp, Stewart in 1899 as No. 1247. Reclassified as an LNER ‘J52’ in 1923 and later renumbered 8846 in 1946, the locomotive continued to serve until its withdrawal from King’s Cross Top Shed in May 1959. It holds historical significance as the first locomotive to be preserved directly from British Railways, having been acquired by Captain W.G. Smith. Today, it forms part of the National Collection, restored to its original identity as Great Northern Railway No. 1247 — a fine example of Britain’s steam heritage.
