Details
The British Rail Class 57 is a highly popular diesel-electric locomotive among model railway collectors and enthusiasts. Introduced between 1998 and 2004, the Class 57 was created by rebuilding older Class 47 locomotives with refurbished EMD engines and upgraded alternators, giving them improved reliability and performance while retaining the classic British Rail design.
A total of 33 Class 57s were built, divided into three sub-classes: 57/0 for freight, 57/3 for passenger operations and rescue duties, and 57/6 also for passenger work with electric train heating. Their top speeds range from 75Â mph to 95Â mph, making them versatile subjects for model layouts, from express passenger trains to heavy freight operations.
Class 57s have been operated by companies including Direct Rail Services, GB Railfreight, Great Western Railway and West Coast Railways, and the 57/3 sub-class has featured themed liveries such as the famous Thunderbirds namesakes. With their distinctive BR-era silhouette combined with modernised features, the Class 57 is a favourite for model railway collectors seeking realism, versatility, and the story of Britain’s late-20th-century diesel locomotives.
