Hornby Dublo 90th A4 Class 2509 'Silver Link' LNER

The LNER Class A4 steam locomotives were an iconic series of streamlined 4-6-2 Pacific locomotives designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) between 1935 and 1938. Built at Doncaster Works, a total of 35 were produced to haul high-speed express passenger services along the East Coast Main Line. Their sleek, aerodynamic design was inspired by contemporary advances in streamlining and significantly reduced air resistance, enabling impressive performance.

The first of the class, No. 2509 Silver Link, was introduced in 1935 and immediately made headlines by reaching 112.5 mph during a press demonstration. However, the most famous member of the class is No. 4468 Mallard, which set the world speed record for steam traction at 126 mph on 3 July 1938—a record that remains unbeaten.

Class A4s remained in service until the early 1960s, when they were gradually withdrawn due to the introduction of diesel traction. Fortunately, six locomotives have been preserved: Mallard, Bittern, Sir Nigel Gresley, Union of South Africa, Dominion of Canada, and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The LNER A4 continues to be celebrated for its engineering excellence, speed, and design - A symbol of British railway innovation. A fine edition to anyone's model layout!
