The locomotive comes factory-fitted with Hornby's advanced HM7000 digital control system, providing Bluetooth operation via the HM7000 App or compatibility with NMRA-standard DCC controllers. The integrated Gen 2 steam generator produces synchronised cold-water steam effects, accurately matched to wheel speed and locomotive sounds for an incredibly immersive operating experience.

This premium model features a die-cast chassis, pony truck and trailing truck, along with die-cast connecting rods and valve gear for enhanced durability and realism. The highly detailed cab includes a fully decorated backhead with instrument dials, while the tender features a separately fitted coal load and detailed bunker interior. Electrical pick-ups are fitted to both the locomotive and tender wheels, connected via an 8-way drawbar with integrated electrical connections for reliable operation.

The Gen 2 steam generator uses cold-water piezo technology with an optical sensor that synchronises steam output with wheel speed. A built-in reservoir provides up to 20 minutes of continuous operation, with adjustable steam settings available through the decoder. The model also includes sprung metal buffers, brass main drive bearings, front and rear NEM coupling pockets, and an accessory pack containing lamps, vacuum pipes, couplings and a tablet catcher. Compatible with HM7000 Power Bank technology, the locomotive is suitable for layouts using 2nd radius curves and above.

Historical Background

Designed by Oliver Bulleid for the Southern Railway, the powerful Merchant Navy Class was built to haul the heaviest express passenger services across the Southern network. Thirty locomotives were constructed at Eastleigh Works between 1941 and 1949, with No. 35028 Clan Line forming part of the final batch ordered shortly before nationalisation.

Completed in December 1948 under British Railways ownership, Clan Line entered service hauling prestigious trains including the Bournemouth Belle and Atlantic Coast Express. Rebuilt in 1959 from its original air-smoothed condition, the locomotive spent much of its working life based at Nine Elms before withdrawal in July 1967.

Preserved by the Merchant Navy Locomotive Society, Clan Line remains one of Britain's most famous operational steam locomotives and continues to haul main line rail tours and heritage services, securing its place as a true icon of Southern steam.
