Details

Experience the perfect combination of historical significance and modern model railway technology with the Hornby LNER Thompson A2/3 No. 500 'Edward Thompson'. Finished in striking LNER lined Apple Green with gold lettering and red shading, this highly detailed OO gauge steam locomotive marks the first Thompson A2/3 from Hornby to feature the latest Gen 2 steam generator technology.

Based on extensive research and original works drawings, this premium model captures the distinctive appearance of Edward Thompson's pioneering Pacific locomotive. Complete with a factory-fitted HM7000 decoder, authentic sound profile and synchronised steam effects, it delivers an immersive operating experience for collectors and operators of LNER layouts.

The integrated Gen 2 steam generator produces realistic cold-water steam effects synchronised to wheel speed, while the pre-installed HM7000 sound system recreates the unique sounds of the Thompson A2/3. Finished with separately fitted details, a detailed cab interior and accurately reproduced LNER livery, No. 500 Edward Thompson is a standout addition to any OO scale steam collection.

This highly detailed model features a die-cast chassis, pony truck and trailing truck, together with die-cast connecting rods and valve gear for exceptional realism. The cab includes a fully decorated backhead with detailed instrument dials, while the tender features a separately fitted coal load and fully detailed bunker. Electrical pick-ups are fitted to both locomotive and tender wheels, connected via an 8-way drawbar with integrated electrical connections for reliable running and simplified maintenance.

The Gen 2 steam generator uses advanced piezo technology and an optical sensor to synchronise steam output with wheel speed and sound. The onboard water reservoir provides up to 20 minutes of continuous steam operation, with adjustable steam settings available through the decoder. Additional features include brass main drive bearings, sprung metal buffers, a NEM coupling pocket, accessory pack and compatibility with the HM7000 Power Bank system. Suitable for layouts using 2nd radius curves and above.

Historical Background

When Edward Thompson succeeded Sir Nigel Gresley as Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway in 1941, he sought to develop a new generation of standard locomotives. Wartime restrictions prevented large-scale new construction, leading Thompson to test many of his design principles through the rebuilding of Gresley's P2 2-8-2 locomotives into Pacifics, which became the A2/2 class.

In 1945, Thompson finally received approval to build a new class of Pacific locomotives. The first of these, No. 500 'Edward Thompson', was completed before his retirement in 1946 and was named in recognition of his contribution to the LNER. A further fourteen A2/3 locomotives followed in 1947, while the remaining planned engines were completed to an improved design by Thompson's successor, Arthur Peppercorn.

Renumbered British Railways No. 60500, the locomotive continued in service until its withdrawal in June 1963. Although none of the A2/3 class survived into preservation, they remain an important chapter in the evolution of LNER Pacific locomotive design and a fascinating subject for steam-era railway modellers.
