Details
The BR Standard Class 5 is a classic British mixed-traffic steam locomotive designed by R. A. Riddles for British Railways in the early 1950s. Built between 1951 and 1957, a total of 172 Class 5 locomotives were constructed at Derby and Doncaster Works to serve across the national network, handling both passenger trains and freight duties on routes from local services to main lines.
The Class 5 features a 4-6-0 wheel arrangement, 6 ft 2 in driving wheels, and a BR3 boiler operating at 225 psi, giving it versatility and reliable performance in mixed-traffic work. Its design drew on the earlier LMS Stanier “Black Five” but incorporated standardised BR components and improvements such as easier maintenance and widely consistent parts.
Withdrawn from British Rail service by the late 1960s as steam was phased out, a handful of Standard Class 5 locomotives survive in preservation today. Examples like 73050 City of Peterborough, 73096, 73082 Camelot and 73129 operate on heritage lines, delighting visitors with steam hauled trains and authentic period detail.
