Details
The LNER Class P2 was a class of powerful British steam locomotives designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the London and North Eastern Railway to haul heavy express passenger trains over the challenging Edinburgh to Aberdeen route. Built at Doncaster Works between 1934 and 1936, six of these 2-8-2 “Mikado” locomotives were introduced to tackle steep gradients and tight curves with greater adhesion and sustained power than many contemporary designs.
Initially painted in LNER green and named after figures from Scottish lore such as 2001 Cock O’ the North, the Class P2 gained streamlined fronts in 1936, reflecting the influence of the successful A4 Pacifics. Despite their raw power and striking presence, all original P2s were rebuilt between 1943–1944 into Thompson Class A2/2 Pacifics under Edward Thompson’s direction, and none of the original locomotives survived into preservation.
