Details
The Battle of Britain Class locomotives are a celebrated series of 4-6-2 “Pacific” steam engines designed by Oliver Bulleid for the Southern Railway in the mid-1940s. Built to haul express passenger services, these locomotives were named after RAF squadrons, aircraft, and notable figures from the 1940 Battle of Britain, commemorating the courage of Britain’s air defence during World War II. Their striking air-smoothed casing, coupled with Bulleid’s innovative engineering, gave them a modern, sleek appearance for the steam era.
A total of 33 Battle of Britain Class locomotives were produced between 1945 and 1946, numbered in the 21C series and later renumbered into the 34000s under British Railways. Many were rebuilt in later years to remove the air-smoothed casing for easier maintenance, but they retained their speed, reliability, and versatility across Southern Railway main lines.
