Details
The BR Standard Class 9F is one of the most powerful and large-wheeled steam locomotive classes ever built for British Railways. Introduced in 1954 as part of the BR Standard range, the 9F was designed by Robert Riddles for heavy freight work, particularly coal and mineral trains, but proved so capable that it was also used on fast express workings. Its 2-10-0 wheel arrangement and large driving wheels gave excellent traction and smooth running at speed, making it a favourite with crews.
A total of 251 locomotives were built between 1954 and 1960, and their distinctive appearance — long boiler, ten driving wheels, and powerful stance — made the Standard 9F an enduring symbol of British steam’s final development phase. The class included famous members like 92020-92099, 92100-92144 and 92220 Evening Star, the latter being the last steam locomotive built by British Railways in 1960.
Although retired from mainline service by the late 1960s with the end of steam traction, many 9Fs survive in preservation, hauling freight and passenger trains on heritage railways.
