Details
The GER Class S69, later classified by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) as the B12, is a classic British 4-6-0 steam locomotive designed to haul express passenger trains from London Liverpool Street along the Great Eastern Main Line. Designed by S. D. Holden, the class was introduced in 1911 to replace the ageing Claud Hamilton 4-4-0s and deliver greater power and reliability for heavier services. Seventy-one locomotives were built for the Great Eastern Railway (GER) between 1911 and 1921, with an additional ten constructed for the LNER in 1928, bringing the total to 81 locomotives.
During their long service careers under GER, LNER and later British Railways, the B12s were versatile performers on express and secondary passenger duties. They underwent several modifications, including changes to boilers and valve gear, leading to distinct sub-types within the class. At nationalisation in 1948, surviving locomotives were renumbered into the 61500s series and continued to serve until the early 1960s, when steam traction was phased out. Only one example, No. 8572 (BR 61572), survives in preservation today, making it a prized piece of railway heritage.
