Details
The British Rail Class 10 is a classic diesel-electric shunting and freight locomotive developed in the late 1950s as part of British Railways’ early modernisation programme. Built between 1955 and 1962, the Class 10 was mechanically similar to the more numerous Class 08, but fitted with Blackstone engines and varying traction equipment, giving it a slightly different performance profile.
With a 0-6-0 wheel arrangement and rugged design, Class 10 locomotives were widely used for yard shunting, short freight turns and light mixed traffic duties across the British Rail network. They were a familiar sight at depots and industrial branches throughout the 1960s and into the early 1970s. Being less standardised than the Class 08 meant that the Class 10 had a shorter working life, and all examples were withdrawn by the late 1970s.
