Details
The GWR 6100 Class is a classic British steam locomotive designed by Charles Collett for the Great Western Railway and introduced in 1931 as a powerful suburban passenger tank engine. Built at Swindon Works between 1931 and 1935, a total of 70 locomotives were produced, all featuring a 2-6-2T wheel arrangement ideal for the stop-start nature of commuter and branch line duties. The 6100s were a development of the earlier 5101 class but with increased boiler pressure for stronger performance.
These “Large Prairie” engines were mainly based around London suburban services out of Paddington, handling frequent trains to destinations such as Slough, Reading, Aylesbury and High Wycombe, and they remained in service until the end of steam on the Western Region of British Railways in 1965. Withdrawals began in 1958, and all but one were scrapped as diesel multiple units and modern traction took over.
