Historical Background

No. 72 'Fenchurch' is one of the most historically significant members of the famous LB&SCR Terrier class. Built in 1872 as an A1 class locomotive for the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway, it was named after the London district served by the railway and quickly became part of the company's growing suburban locomotive fleet.

In June 1898, Fenchurch was sold to the Newhaven Harbour Company, where its light weight made it ideal for shunting duties across the swing bridge connecting the harbour's east and west quays. Remarkably, the locomotive retained its original Stroudley livery and name for many years before eventually receiving Newhaven Harbour Company lettering.

The locomotive was rebuilt to A1X specification in April 1913 with a larger boiler, improving performance and extending its working life. Acquired by the Southern Railway in 1926, Fenchurch continued in service through the Southern Railway and British Railways eras, becoming the oldest working locomotive on BR's books.

Withdrawn from service in 1964, Fenchurch was purchased by the Bluebell Railway, where it became one of the pioneering locomotives of the British railway preservation movement. Today, it remains one of the most celebrated preserved steam locomotives in the country and a true icon of Victorian railway history.
