Details

The British Rail Class 803 is a modern electric multiple unit (EMU) built by Hitachi Rail as part of the AT300 family and introduced into UK service in 2021. It was specifically ordered by open-access operator Lumo to provide a high-quality, low-fare passenger service between London King’s Cross and Edinburgh Waverley on the East Coast Main Line. The Class 803 units share their bodyshell with the Hitachi A-train family but are unique in that they operate solely on electric power without onboard diesel engines, instead using batteries to support onboard services in the event of power loss.

Each Class 803 set comprises five cars, with seating for around 402 standard-class passengers, and they are capable of 125 mph service speeds. Designed for intercity express travel, the units feature air conditioning, free Wi-Fi and modern passenger comforts, making them popular with today’s long-distance travellers. The fleet is numbered 803001–803005 and operates from Lumo’s depot at Craigentinny, Edinburgh.
