Details

The British Rail Class 395, nicknamed the “Javelin”, is a modern high-speed dual-voltage electric multiple-unit (EMU) built by Hitachi Rail as part of its A-Train family. Entering service in 2009, the Class 395 was designed to operate on High Speed 1 and on conventional lines in southeast England, linking London St Pancras with Kent destinations including Ashford, Ramsgate and Dover. It was the first Hitachi-built high-speed train sold to a European customer and marked a major step forward in UK domestic high-speed rail travel.

Typically formed of six-car units, the Class 395 fleet of 29 trains can operate at up to 140 mph under 25 kV AC overhead electrification on High Speed 1, and at 100 mph on 750 V DC third-rail power on classic lines. Its high acceleration and modern design trace influences from Japanese high-speed technology adapted for UK service.

The Class 395 fleet gained widespread public attention during the 2012 London Olympics, when it provided fast shuttle services between London and the Olympic Park, cementing its “Javelin” nickname.
