Details
The GWR 1000 Class, more commonly known as the “County” Class, was a powerful series of 4-6-0 steam locomotives designed by Frederick Hawksworth for the Great Western Railway just after World War II. Thirty locomotives were built at Swindon Works between 1945 and 1947 to provide strong mixed-traffic performance, handling express passenger trains as well as heavier freight duties on routes radiating from London Paddington and across the Western Region.
The Counties represented the final and most advanced development of the GWR’s two-cylinder 4-6-0 tradition, combining elements from earlier successful classes with post-war refinements for better steaming and operational flexibility. After the nationalisation of Britain’s railways in 1948, they continued in service with British Railways, working alongside Castles and other express types until all were withdrawn and scrapped by 1964.
