Details
The LMS Fowler Class 3F, often affectionately known as a “Jinty”, is a classic British 0-6-0 steam locomotive designed by Henry Fowler for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). Introduced in 1924, the Class 3F was built as a reliable and versatile shunting and local freight engine capable of handling yard work, short goods turns and branch-line duties. Their simple design and easy maintenance made them an everyday sight at depots and on secondary lines throughout the LMS network.
A total of 422 locomotives were produced between 1924 and 1931, making the Jinty one of the most numerous and familiar steam types of its era. The 3F’s 0-6-0 wheel arrangement provided excellent traction for slow-speed work, and examples continued in service well into the British Railways period after nationalisation in 1948. Withdrawals began in the 1950s, with the last examples retired by the early 1960s as diesel shunters and modern traction took over.
