The British Rail Class 91 is a landmark high-speed electric locomotive developed for the electrification of the East Coast Main Line in the late 1980s and early 1990s. A fleet of 31 locomotives was built by BREL at Crewe Works between 1988 and 1991 as part of the InterCity 225 programme, combining modern electric traction with Mark 4 coaching stock and a Driving Van Trailer for push–pull operation. Designed to operate at up to 125 mph in service, the Class 91 played a central role in revitalising express passenger services between London and northern cities including Leeds, Newcastle and Edinburgh.

Class 91s are notable for their streamlined bodywork, advanced electrical systems and distinctive dual-cab layout, with a high-speed nose at one end and a “blunt” secondary cab that blends into coaching stock at the other. Although originally envisaged to run at 140 mph, regular service was limited to 125 mph due to signalling constraints. Across decades of mainline service they became synonymous with East Coast electrics under British Rail and later operators such as GNER, National Express East Coast and LNER.

Several Class 91 locomotives have been withdrawn, scrapped or placed into preservation, with examples like 91131 secured for display at the Museum of Scottish Railways. Others remain in service hauling InterCity 225 sets with London North Eastern Railway and heritage operators.
