Historical Background

Introduced by British Rail in 1963, the Class 73 was a unique electro-diesel locomotive designed specifically for the Southern Region's extensive third-rail electrified network. Combining electric operation with a built-in diesel engine, the class offered a level of flexibility unmatched by most other locomotive types of the era.

When operating on electrified routes, the locomotives drew power from the Southern Region's 650–750V DC third-rail system. Away from electrified lines, a 600-horsepower diesel engine enabled them to continue working freight yards, depots, engineering sites and non-electrified branch routes without assistance.

All 49 locomotives were built with push-pull capability, allowing them to work efficiently with Southern Region multiple-unit stock. Their versatility ensured long careers across passenger, freight, parcels and departmental services, and many examples remain in operation today, making the Class 73 one of Britain's most enduring and recognisable locomotive classes.
