Details

The British Rail Class 60 is a powerful Co-Co heavy freight diesel-electric locomotive built by Brush Traction for British Rail between 1989 and 1993 as a dedicated Type 5 freight mover. A total of 100 locomotives were constructed to meet a requirement for high-powered traction capable of hauling heavy bulk trains such as aggregates, steel and minerals, with each engine producing around 3,100 bhp and capable of around 60 mph on heavy freight workings. Their rugged, block-style body and strong tractive effort quickly earned them the affectionate nickname “Tugs” among rail enthusiasts.

Class 60s entered service during the final years of British Rail and passed into private ownership following privatisation, with many working for operators such as English Welsh & Scottish (EWS), DB Cargo UK, GB Railfreight, Colas Rail and others. Whilst some locomotives were stored or sold on as usage patterns changed, a number have been refurbished into “Super 60” spec and remain in traffic hauling heavy freight into the 2020s.
